atnongara (light stones). The stones of the
title are usually various types of quartzes, mountain
crystals. During an initiation trance Australian shamans
used to place them in the convert's body to equip him with
the ability to foretell future events, to heal and to
identify the spiritual causes of diseases. Light stones were
therefore responsible for the shaman's mystic powers.
