Four Songs to words from the Book of Isaiah
is a setting of paraphrased Biblical texts, which is free of
religious references. The cycle forms a kind of arch
structure. Two outer songs correspond to one another in
terms of the musical material and overall character, whereas
in the middle ones the tension increases, employing the Dies
irae motif.
