Pavel Bogacz was born in 1957 in Bohumin
(Czech Republic). He studied at the Conservatory in Ostrava
(1972-78) and at the Academy of Music and Drama in Prague
(1978-82). He has taken part in master-classes given by
Nathan Milstein in Zurich (1980). Upon graduation, he moved
to Bratislava, where he became concertmaster of the Slovak
Philharmonic Orchestra (1981-90). He held the same position
in the Kanazawa Orchestra in Japan (1990-99). He was also a
member of several chamber orchestras such as the Prague
Chamber Soloists (1978-82), the Slovak Chamber Orchestra in
Bratislava, 'Capella Istropolitana', Japan Virtuoso
Orchestra, 'Century' Orchestra Osaka, as well as of the
Groeningen Symphony Orchestra (The Netherlands). He was the
leader of the Bratislava String Trio (1982-90) and played in
a piano trio and other chamber ensembles. He has also
developed a career as a soloist.
His repertoire comprises both classical and contemporary
music. He has given numerous premieres of works by Slovak
composers. His discography includes 5 cds for Deutsche
Grammophon 'Messages for the 21st Century', one of which
(featuring Schnittke's Concerto grosso No. 1) won the Record
Academy Prize (1993).
He also pursues a teaching career. He was a professor at the
Academy of Music and Drama in Bratislava (1982-90), and
then, until 1999, at the University of Tokyo.
He plays an instrument from the workshop of A. H. Amati of
Cremona, dating from 1613.
