Mikuláš Škuta was born in 1960 in Komárno
(Slovakia), He studied piano with Alěbeta Elanová at the
Conservatory in Bratislava and with Eva Fischerová-Martvońová
the Academy of Music and Drama. He polished his skills as a
postgraduate student of Claude Helffer in Paris.
His honours include Second Prize at the Beethoven
Competition in Hradec (the Czech Republic) in 1980 and a
unanimous victory at the International Smetana Competition
(1981). He also won Third Prize at the Maria Callas
International Competition in Athens. He has received awards
from the Slovak Music Fund (special prize on the 'Prague
Spring' Festival Piano Competition, 1988), Slovak and Czech
critics on numerous occasions.
Since 1993, he has divided his time between classical music
and jazz. He has proved a talented improviser. In the field
of classical music, he has performed as soloist with the
Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, the Košice State
Philharmonic, the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, the Slovak Radio
Symphony Orchestra, the Slovak Sinfonietta of Žilina, the
'Cappella Istropolitana' and the Bruckner Orchester Linz.
He has also appeared (sometimes in a duo with his wife,
Eleonora Škutova) at numerous prestigious festivals,
including the Salzburg Festival, 'Melos Ethos' in
Bratislava, the 'Warsaw Autumn', the Internationale
Musikfestspiele Davos, 'Contrasts' in Lviv, and the
Contemporary Music Festival in Cracow.
His discography includes a wide selection of cds, both solo
and in various ensembles, featuring mainly contemporary
Slovak music and jazz. |
