ensemble recherche is one of the most distinguished groups of performers specializing in new music. With almost four hundred premieres to its credit since it was founded in 1985, the ensemble has made a substantial contribution to the development of contemporary chamber music, achieving a high position on the international music scene.
In its home town, Freiburg im Breisgau, 'ensemble recherche' has its own subscription series, organized by the Friends of the ensemble. In addition, the groups is subsidized by the City of Freiburg and the State of Baden-Württemberg.
The repertoire of the group ranges from the classics of the late 19th century, through the French impressionists, the Second Viennese School and the expressionists, to composers of the Darmstadt School.
Some attention is also devoted to pre-1700 music performed from the contemporary viewpoint. An extensive discography, comprising over 30 cds, testifies to the vast scope of the ensemble's repertoire.
Apart from its concert activities, 'ensemble recherche' takes part in music theatre projects, radio productions and film soundtracks. It also gives courses for instrumentalists and composers and invites young talented musicians to open rehearsals.
