Born in 1941 in Bandung, Indonesia, he studied music theory and percussion performance at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He took part in composition courses conducted by Kees van Barren, and also worked in the electronic music studio under the direction of Dick Raaymakers. After completing his studies he remained at the conservatory, lecturing on music theory. In 1992 he initiated a special project for very young composers.
His compositions have won many awards at the competitions for electroacoustic music in Bourges and Turin. He is a regular figure on the programmes of the World Music Days organised by the iscm, as well as the ONorth/South Consonance Festival1 in New York. He has received commissions from the Foundation for the Creation of Music, the Johan Wagenaar Foundation, the Baron de Vos van Steenwijk Foundation, the Amsterdam Foundation of Art and the Centre for Electroacoustic Music in Bourges. He has also written work for OHet Trio1, Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam and the Chamber Orchestra of Radio Netherlands. In addition to the Netherlands, his works have been performed in France, Spain, Great Britain, Austria, Germany, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Poland, Norway, Finland, Brazil, Korea, Indonesia, Japan, the United States and Mexico. His music has been recorded by Harmonia Mundi, nm Classics and Attacca.
Selected works (since 2001): Array for string orchestra (2001), Con Toda el Alma for bass clarinet and organ (2001), Dark Intervals, electronic ballet music (200102), Music, when soft voices die for tape (2002), Transport for toy piano and voice (2002), Machina ex Deo for harmonium and tape (2002), Case history for one percussionist (2002), Tandem for bassethorn, clarinet, bass clarinet, marimba and percussion (2002), Sin descanso for block flutes and tape, for one performer (2002), Wajang for piano and cd (2002), Rush for piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, piano, violin, viola and cello (200203), Zest for saxophone quartet and six percussionists (2003), Stepping Stones for baritone solo, mixed choir and organ (2003), Samen Sterk for ensemble and bass clarinet solo (2003).

Samen Sterk (Together We1re Strong) was commissioned by De Ereprijs Ensemble and is dedicated to Wim Boerman, the conductor Wim Megens and the soloist Harry Sparnaay.
The piece is performed by a solo bass clarinet and the ensemble in its full line-up. The starting point is an idea whereby joint effort brings
a much better result than the sum of efforts undertaken individually. In the soloist1s intense collaboration with the ensemble, the dialogue with individual instruments is of particular importance.
The soloist1s additional task is to coordinate and stimulate the ensemble, like a Kappellmeister.
