Was born in 1954. He graduated from the Royal
Conservatory in The Hague where he studied the piano with Geoffrey Madge.
Hs is one of the most prominent Dutch pianists specializing in new music.
Many composers have written pieces especially for him.
His career as a soloist has included performances with the leading
orchestras in the Netherlands, such as the Het Residentie Orkest (under
Reinbert de Leeuw and Oliver Knussen) and the Radio Kamerorkest (under
Peter Eötvös), as well as the Asko and Schoenberg Ensembles. He is also
a member of new music groups including the Xenakis Ensemble, Ebony Band,
Amsterdam Piano Quartet and loos. He performs in duos with the pianist
Cees van Zeeland (since 1978), and the violinist Heleen Hulst.
His repertoire includes a wide range of works by major 20th-century
composers, notably Ives, Berg, Kurtág, Xenakis, Henze and Messiaen.
He has premiered numerous works by Andriessen, Wagenaar, Guus Janssen, de
Bondt and Rob Zuidam. He has made recordings for many labels, including
Attaca, Channel Classics, Composers Voice/Donemus and Factory Records.
Foreign tours have taken him to many European countries, the United States,
Canada, Russia, Japan, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa.
Earlier this year he was awarded the prestigious OTheo Bruins Prize1 by
Johan Wagenaar Foundation.
the national polish radio symphony orchestra was
founded in 1935 in Warsaw on the initiative of the well-known conductor
and composer Grzegorz Fitelberg, who led the ensemble until the outbreak
of World War Two. In March 1945 the orchestra was given a new lease of
life in Katowice by Witold Rowicki. In 1947, Fitelberg returned from
abroad and became its Artistic Director. After his death in 1953, the
orchestra was headed for fifteen years by Jan Krenz. His successors have
included Bohdan Wodiczko, Kazimierz Kord, Tadeusz Struga1a, Jerzy
Maksymiuk, Stanis1aw Wis1ocki and Jacek Kaspszyk. From 1983 to 2000 Antoni
Wit served as the orchestra1s Artistic and Managing Director. In September
2000 Joanna Wnuk-Nazarowa became the orchestra1s Managing Director and in
October 2001 the post of Artistic Director was taken over by Gabriel
Chmura. In May 2002 Stanis1aw Skrowaczewski was appointed the orchestra1s
Principal Guest Conductor.
The National Polish Radio so has made a great many radio recordings. It
has also recorded about 150 lps and cds for Polskie Nagrania, emi-hmv,
Decca, Philips/Point Music, nvc Arts, Newport Classic, cri, Thorofon
Schallplatten and naxos (winning the Diapason d1Or and Grand Prix du
Disque for the recording of the complete piano concertos by Prokofiev,
1993). In 2002 the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Antoni Wit
received the Cannes Classical Award in the midem Classique category for
the recording of Messiaen1s Turangalîla-Symphonie.
Foreign tours have taken the orchestra to most of the European countries,
the Middle and Far East, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada,
and Brazil. The orchestra has worked with many outstanding conductors such
as Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Colombo, Paul Kletzki, Kiril Kondrashin, Sir
Charles Mackerras, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Jerzy Semkow, and
Stanis1aw Skrowaczewski, as well as with world-famous soloists, including
Martha Argerich, Placido Domingo, Nicolai Gedda, Barbara Hendricks, Julius
Katchen, Wilhelm Kempff, Marguerite Long, Garrick Ohlsson, Maurizio
Pollini, Ruggiero Ricci, Mstislav Rostropovich, Arthur Rubinstein, Isaac
Stern, Henryk Szeryng, and Krystian Zimerman.
