Read philosophy and received an all-round musical
training at the Conservatory in Milan (violin, flute, composition and
conducting). He continued his education as a postgraduate student of
Sandor Vegh (chamber music), Franco Donatoni (composition) and Peter Eötvös
(conducting) at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He has collaborated as an
assistant with Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, Carlo Maria Giulini and
Leonard Bernstein.
His interests focus on contemporary music. Since 1989 he has worked
closely with Peter Eötvös. He has also collaborated with Pierre Boulez,
David Robertson, Markus Stenz, George Benjamin, Arturo Tamayo and Mark
Foster. He has performed at major contemporary music festivals including
OArs Musica1 in Brussels, OTime of Music1 in Vitaasari (Finland), OWien
Modern1, OMusica1 in Strasbourg, OArchipel1 in Geneva, OPrésences1 in
Paris, the bbc Festival in Edinburgh and the OWarsaw Autumn1 (debut in
2002). He has conducted concerts in the bbc Osounding the century1 series
and worked with such groups as Ensemble InterContemporain (in 199698 as
assistant to its artistic director), Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien,
2e2m, Nieuw Ensemble, L'Itineraire, Israel Contemporary Players (close
cooperation since 2000).
He has taken part in such major projects as Stockhausen1s Gruppen at the
Salzburg Festival (1994), Ligeti1s Le Grande Macabre in Paris (1999) and
Berio1s Sinfonia at the La Monnaie in Brussels (1997).
In 199298 he conducted the Ensemble Nuove Sincronie in Milan. In 199698
he worked as Ochief assistant1 of the Ensemble InterContemporain.
He also teaches at the Accademia Internazionale di Musica in Milan and
Scuola Superiore di Musica di Fiesole in Florence. He is also
a noted composer. His works have been performed in Italy, France, Belgium,
Germany, Japan, Finland, Israel and the United States.
