Was born in 1946 in Wroc1aw as the son of
a Wroc1aw Opera Chorus member. He began his musical education under the
guidance of Adam KopyciYski. In 1957 he emigrated with his family to
Israel, where he continued to study music. In 1964 he enrolled at the
Music Academy in Tel Aviv, where he gained the diplomas in composition,
piano performance and conducting. In 196869 he studied conducting with
Pierre Dervaux at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, and subsequently
(196971) with Hans Swarowsky at the Music Academy in Vienna.
Gabriel Chmura has been awarded many prizes at prestigious competitions,
including First Prizes in Besançon (1970) and at the Herbert von Karajan
Competition in Berlin (1971), as well as Gold Medal at the Concorso
Cantelli at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
In 197491 he worked as Artistic Director of the Aachen Opera (Germany)
and of the National Orchestra in Ottawa. In October 2001 he assumed the
post of Artistic Director of the National Polish Radio Symphony
