Is an artist who is highly valued for the extreme
flexibility of her vocal technique, perfected with teachers like Gina
Cigna and Dorothy Dorow. This quality, together with her interest in
musical research in particular the contemporary repertoire has made
her the favourite choice of many composers. Luciano Berio invited her to
sing in the new edition of his Calmo, in Sequenza III and in Folksongs and
created for her the role of Ada in Outis (Teatro alla Scala, 1996).
Giacinto Scelsi has also entrusted her with the interpretation of his
scores.
She has successfully performed and recorded numerous works, including many
world premieres, by Berio, Cage, De Pablo, Donatoni, Ferneyhough,
Francesconi, Gervasoni, Kurtag, Panni and Pennisi. She has also performed
works by leading composers of the historic twentieth century from
Debussy to Bartók, from Schoenberg to Dallapiccola, from Stravinsky to
Webern under the direction of maestri like Berio, Eötvös, Ferro,
Gelmetti Robertson, Sinopoli and Tamayo.
As an opera singer, she has sung in Pennisi1s Esequie della Luna and
Tristan, Scogna1s Anton, Britten1s The Turn of the Screw, Berio1s Outis
and La vera storia, De Pablo1s La madre invita a comer, Donatoni1s Il velo
dissolto at Milan1s Teatro alla Scala, Florence1s Teatro Comunale and
Teatro La Fenice of Venice. In 1991 she was awarded the Gino Tani Prize
for opera.
Soloist with the London Sinfo-nietta, the bbc and the orchestras of Radio
France, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and rai; guest of the
Barbican Theatre and Royal Festival Hall in London, of the Opéra Bastille
in Paris and of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, she inaugurated the Maggio
Musicale Fiorentino in 1986 and the Wien Modern in 1990 and was invited to
the biennial events of Helsinski, Berlin and Venice as well as to the
Holland Festival, the Brussels Ars Musica Festival and the Cervantino
Festival of Mexico.
Luisa Castellani collaborates with the Ensemble InterContemporain of Paris
(presenting the first performance in France of Sciarrino1s Lohengrin and
performing many times the Marteau sans maître of Boulez), with the
Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt and the Ensemble Recherche of Freiburg, with
the asko Ensemble of Amsterdam, with the Arditti Quartet, the Contrechamps
group of Geneva and with soloists Antonio Ballista, Bruno Canino,
Massimiliano Damerini, Andras Keller and Andrea Lucchesini.
As teacher, she has been invited to hold masterclasses and conferences in
Bolivia, China, Switzerland, Hungary and the usa as well as in Italy, as
the person responsible for the Class of Contemporary Vocality of the
European Union specialization courses.
She has recorded for both radio and television and has made numerous cds
for Deutsche Grammophon, Fonit-Cetra, Harmonia Mundi, Hungaraton, rca,
Ricordi, Stradivarius and Teldec, including the complete lieder repertoire
of Mozart. She recently recorded Schoenberg1s Pierrot Lunaire for Teldec,
under the direction of Sinopoli, and Berio1s Sequenza III in the complete
edition of the Sequenze series recorded for Deutsche Grammophon under the
direct supervision of the composer.
