Was born in Brive, France in 1959. After a successful career as a flautist, he took up conducting in 1990. He is Music Director of the Paris-based Ensemble Court-Circuit, which he co-founded in 1991 with the composer Philippe Hurel.
He is especially known for his performances of the repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries, having been inspired by Pierre Boulez with whom he has been in close contact for many years. He receives regular invitations from major festivals and orchestras in many European countries, the United States, Canada and Australia.
His recording of Grisey1s Les Espaces Acoustiques won both the Diapason d1or de l1année 1999 oraz the Grand Prix de l1Académie Charles Cros.
In the past few years he has conducted many different orchestras including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the London Sinfonietta, the Ensemble the Ensemble InterContemporain, Ensemble Modern, Northern Sinfonia, and the orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He conducted members of the Berlin Philharmonic at the Salzburg Easter Festival. He made his bbc Proms debut the same year, conducting the Nash Ensemble. He also conducted London1s Philharmonia at the 50th anniversary concert of the Royal Festival Hall.
In 2002 Pierre-Andre Valade appeared with the bbc Symphony Orchestra, the bbc Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Saarbrucken Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Philharmonie de Lorraine. He also gave concerts at the Strasbourg, Lucerne, Dublin, Aldeburgh and Huddersfield Festivals, and at OUltima1 Festival in Oslo.
His 2003 engagements include
a premiere of the new opera by Giovanni Verrando Alex Brücke Langer with Bolzano Opera and the world premiere of Diphona by
Sir Harrison Birtwistle with Ensemble Modern.
His honours include the Chevalier dans l1Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Minister of Culture (2001).
