Born in 1969, studied piano, composition and conducting
at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. He also graduated from the
Bologna University. He was assistant conductor with Bruno Aprea at the
Martina Franca International Festival (the production of the first modern
version of Leonardo Leo1s opera Amor vuol sofferenza; Italy, 1994). His
major engagements have included Mascagni1s Iris at the Wexford Opera
Festival (Ireland, 1995) and Verdi1s Traviata at the Spoleto Festival
(1997). He won the Milan Conducting Prize for his work with Orchestra
Nuova Cameristica (1994) and the Maurizio Rinaldi Prize for the production
of Puccini1s Le Villi (1996). He has conducted many Italian ensembles
including the Orchestra Citta di Ferrara, Roma Symphonia, Gruppo
Strumentale Musica d1Oggi, appearing at OCivitafestival1, ONuova
Consonanza1 and ORomaeuropa 20021.
Contemporary music is among Marco Angius1 main interests. He has conducted
performances of Le marteau sans maître by Boulez and Schönberg1s Pierrot
lunaire. The performance of Salvatore Sciar-rino1s Studi per l1intonazione
for soloists and an ensemble of 100 flutes and 100 saxophones at the 2000
Festival delle Nazioni di Citta di Castello was met with both enthusiastic
reception among audiences and critical acclaim (Le Monde de la Musique,
Diapason, Répertoire, Musica).
Marco Angius1 teaching activities included positions at the Conservatories
Santa Cecilia (199798) and Egidio Romualdo Duni (19992003) in Rome. At
present, he teaches at the city1s Arts Academy, is the Principal Conductor
of Algoritmo Ensemble, and contributes to the quarterly Hortus Musicus.
algoritmo ensemble
was founded in 2002 by a group of musicians committed to the performance
of contemporary music. Its members have performed in such prestigious
venues as the Berlin Philharmonic, Teatro alla Scala, and ircam, as well
as at numerous festivals. The group1s debut at an all-Fedele concert
during ORomaeuropa 20021 led to invitations to OCivica Scuola di Musica1
in Milan (May 2003), the Contemporary Music Festival in Bellinzona,
Switzerland (September 2003), OWarsaw Autumn1 and ONew Auditorium1 in Rome
(October 2003).
The repertoire of the ensemble includes major works of 20th-century music
and premieres of new pieces, music for solo instruments and chamber
ensemble (including those using electronics).
