Was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she studied flute
with Jack Wellbaum and chamber music with Peter Kamnitzer (a member of
LaSalle Quartet). She continued her education with Aurele Nicolet at the
Musikhochschule in Freiburg (Germany).
While still a student, she was
a soloist with the Cincinnati Contemporary Music Ensemble. She has
performed under such prominent conductors as Ernest Bour, Peter Eötvös
and Lothar Zagrosek. Between 1980 and 2000 she was
a member of Ensemble Köln. Since 1995 she has appeared in a duo with the
violinist David Alberman. She has made many recordings for radio and
various labels. Her hon-ours include the Ohio State Music Prize and the
Kranichsteiner Musikpreis for the interpretation of contemporary music.
Carin Levine has given first performances of many new pieces. She has
collaborated with Brian Ferneyhough, Toshio Hosokawa, Mauricio Kagel,
Younghi Pagh-Paan, Robert HP Platz, Giacinto Scelsi and Dieter Schnebel.
She eagerly supports up-and-coming composers of new music. Her teaching
activities include the Darmstadt Summer Courses for Contemporary Music and
masterclasses throughout Europe and elsewhere. She teaches in the higher
music schools in Detmold, Lubeck and Bremen.
Carin Levine is the author of
The Techniques of Flute Playing and the editor of the series OContemporary
Music for Flute1 (Bärenreiter Publishers).
