born in 1959, studied in his native Hanover, as well as in Hamburg and London. He has been a trombonist with Ensemble Modern since 1983. He has worked with many composers and conductors including Ernest Bour, Michael Gielen, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Hans Zender, John Cage, David Tudor, Ornette Coleman, Luigi Nono, Ingo Metzmacher, Peter Eötvös, Frank Zappa, Karlheinz Stockhausen and, in recent years, with Helmut Oehring, Johannes Maria Staud, Fred Frith, John Zorn, John Scofield and Bill Viola. He was a faculty member in Michael Gielen’s conducting class at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and, from 1992 to 1996, he worked as the director of Ensemble Neue Musik as well as professor and guest professor at the Academy of Arts in Bremen. He is currently a professor for the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt as well as the ‘Impuls’ Master Courses in Graz. He has performed with the Arditti Quartet, the Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio so, the Austrian so, the Orchestra of Frankfurt Opera, the Saarland Radio Orchestra, and the Dutch Radio Orchestra. He has given first performances of numerous pieces, including many written specially for him.
