born in 1964 in Cologne, initially studied the piano at
the Conservatory in Arnhem (1988–89) and the Higher School of Music in
Cologne (1989–96). In 1991 he started to study the trumpet with Malte
Burba at the same school. From 1991 to 1994 he worked intensively with
trumpet player Bruno Leicht. They played together in a duo, quartet and
double quartet (‘The Streetfighters’, with, among others, Wayne
Dockery, John Betsch, Matthias Schubert and Claudio Puntin). During this
time, Dörner formed the Axel Dörner Quartet with Frank Gratkowski, Hans
Schneider and Martin Blume, and ‘The Remedy’ with Sebastian
Gramss and Klaus Wagner (and guests Peter Kowald, Tom Cora and Matthias
Schubert). All these groups made numerous appearances on radio and
television,
as well as in concerts.
In 1994 Dörner moved to Berlin, where his range of artistic activity
further expanded. His quartet joined ‘Die Enttäuschung’ group (Rudi
Mahall, Uli Jenssen, Jan Roder and Alexander von Schlippenbach) in the
performance of all the compositions of Thelonius Monk. He also performed as
a soloist and with many jazz groups, such as ‘The Recepy’ the
Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, ‘Improvisers Pool’, Aki
Takase Sextet Mis&Les, a quintet with George Lewis, Evan Parker,
Alexander von Schlippenbach and Paul Lovens, the Bob Rutman
‘Steelcello Ensemble’, ‘King Übü Örchestrü’,
Butch Morris Berlin Skyscraper Lines, spok-Ensemble (with Aleks Kolkowski,
R. Mahall and Matthias Bajer), The London Jazz Composers Orchestra, and
‘Hedros’ (with Mats Gustafsson, Günter Christmann, Barry Guy).
He has composed many pieces for acoustic instruments.
