born in 1964 in Cologne, initially studied the piano at the Conservatory in Arnhem (1988–89) and the Higher School of Music in Cologne (1989–96). In 1991 he started to study the trumpet with Malte Burba at the same school. From 1991 to 1994 he worked intensively with trumpet player Bruno Leicht. They played together in a duo, quartet and double quartet (‘The Streetfighters’, with, among others, Wayne Dockery, John Betsch, Matthias Schubert and Claudio Puntin). During this time, Dörner formed the Axel Dörner Quartet with Frank Gratkowski, Hans Schneider and Martin Blume, and ‘The Remedy’ with Sebastian Gramss and Klaus Wagner (and guests Peter Kowald, Tom Cora and Matthias Schubert). All these groups made numerous appearances on radio and television,
as well as in concerts.
In 1994 Dörner moved to Berlin, where his range of artistic activity further expanded. His quartet joined ‘Die Enttäuschung’ group (Rudi Mahall, Uli Jenssen, Jan Roder and Alexander von Schlippenbach) in the performance of all the compositions of Thelonius Monk. He also performed as a soloist and with many jazz groups, such as ‘The Recepy’ the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, ‘Improvisers Pool’, Aki Takase Sextet Mis&Les, a quintet with George Lewis, Evan Parker, Alexander von Schlippenbach and Paul Lovens, the Bob Rutman ‘Steelcello Ensemble’, ‘King Übü Örchestrü’, Butch Morris Berlin Skyscraper Lines, spok-Ensemble (with Aleks Kolkowski, R. Mahall and Matthias Bajer), The London Jazz Composers Orchestra, and ‘Hedros’ (with Mats Gustafsson, Günter Christmann, Barry Guy).
He has composed many pieces for acoustic instruments.
