Carl-Ludwig Hübsch, born in 1966 in Freiburg on Br.,
began his career in punk and rock groups, as well as local brassbands,
before studying at the city’s Higher School of Music (singing, drums,
theory). He continued his education in Cologne with H. Gelhart (tuba) and J.
Fritsch (composition). He also studied electronic music and improvisation.
In 1997 he studied with Ramamani from the Carnataka College of Percussion.
He has resided in Cologne since 1990.
He performs regularly in concert halls, studios and theatres, lending his
talents to ensembles and orchestras. He made a name for himself for his
unique solo concerts. At present he concentrates on improvised music and
composition and runs workshops in tuba and improvisation.
Since 1989 he has performed with such musicians as Tomasz Stañko, Lester
Bowie, Jasper van’t Hof, Paul Lovens, and Ernst Reijseger. He
co-authored many projects, including the Human-noise Congress Wiesbaden
(1994), Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy (1995, 1996),
RealTimeMusicMeeting (1999), and Jazzfest Berlin. He has made recordings
with the Arthur Blythe Quartett, the Hannes Zerbe/Willem Breuker Blech Band,
the October Orchestra Amster-dam, and the Matthias Schubert Sextett. Since
1999 he has led a trio, with M. Schubert and W. Wierbos. In 2002 he held the
omi-Arts Grant in the United States. In 2003 he received the
‘Jazzpott’ Award in Essen. Foreign tours have taken him to
Namibia, the United States and India.
He has also gained much expe-rience in music theatre, writing incidental
music and taking part
in many productions, such as Blauzone (Theater Hora, Zürich, 1996),
Rinderwahnsinn by John von Dueffel (Schauspiel Bonn, 1999), Balkonszenen and
Othello.therapie (2000, 2001), and Shakespeare’s The Merchant of
Venice (Landest-heater Linz, 2001). In 2000 he performed the solo part in
the chamber opera Idyllen by Thomas Beimel.
