born in 1962 in Offenbach, started playing the piano at
the age of seven. In the 1980s he moved from
popular music to jazz and joined the kooperative new jazz/artist (Wiesbaden),
a ‘cooperative’ of improvising musicians. This has been his most
intensive time of learning about music, establishing new artistic con-
tacts and developing his own
musical ideas.
Improvisation occupies a central place in Uwe Oberg’s musical
acti-vity. Fascinated by free-jazz, he
has developed unique piano techniques, including the use of prepared piano.
He also writes his
own music and is acclaimed as a highly individual interpreter of jazz
compositions.
At present, he is the leader
of two ensembles: a quartet, in which his partners are Matthias Schubert
(tenor sax), J. Wuchner (double bass) and J. Fischer (drums), and a trio,
with Georg Wolf (double bass) and J. Fischer. The Oberg Quartet initially
focused exclusively on John Coltrane’s music; now it performs mainly
Oberg’s own compositions. In addition to fixed projects,
Oberg enjoys the improvised encounter with musicians of different styles and
cultures, having
a special affinity for the duet-format. He performs with Ulrich Böttcher (electronics)
and in the Duo Xu Fengxia: Uwe Oberg (traditional and modern Chinese music
and contemporary piano music), Paul Lovens (percussion), with Xu Fengxia (guzheng,
vocals).
He often performs on the borderline of music, theatre, ballet, multimedia
and, recently, also silent film. Since 1990 he has worked for Deutsche
Filminstitut / Film-museum Ffm.
He has performed with
such renowned artists as Alfred Harth, Peter Kowald, Xu Fengxia, Matthias
Schubert, Philippe Micol, Uli Phillipp, Tony Oxley, Sven-Ake Johansson, Rudi
Mahall, Urs Leimgruber, Saadet Türköz, Luigi Archetti, Heinz Sauer, and
Subroto Roy Chaudhuri.
After living in Cologne for three years, he settled again in Wiesbaden.
