born in 1929 in Lviv, he studied with Artur Malawski (composition)
and Zdzisław Jachimecki (musicology). He made his compositional debut at
the age of seventeen. During 58 years of intense creative work (including
the theatre) he has written 495 compositions and
44 theatre plays. His works have been performed on seven occasions at iscm
World Music Days.
He creates music of all kinds, from symphonic, chamber and solo, through
sacred music and jazz to music dramas and electroacoustic compositions. He
has received 12 awards for his music and 5 for his plays, which have been
translated into 16 languages, including Hungarian, Norwegian, Estonian,
Spanish and Hebrew.
His graphic works have been displayed worldwide, including Paris, Vienna and
New York.
The best known of his musical pieces are Quattro movimenti in the form of
piano concerto, Topofonica for 40 different instruments, Concerto b-a-c-h
for organ, violin and orchestra, the 100-minute long Das Leben einer Stadt
for a septet of soloists, three sopranos and orchestra, Sinfonia (Concerto)
for 15 soloists and orchestra (in two ‘acts’, 440-page score),
Jazz Concerto, and several instrumental concertos.
