Gabriel Chmura, born in 1946 in Wrocław, in 1957
emigrated with his family to Israel. In 1964 he en-rolled at the Music
Academy in Tel Aviv, where he gained the diplomas in composition, piano and
conduc-ting. In 1968–69 he studied conducting with Pierre Dervaux at
the Ecole Normale de Musique w Paryżu, and subsequently (1969–71)
with Hans Swarowsky at the Music Academy in Vienna. His honours include
First Prizes in Besanćon (1970) and at the Herbert von Karajan Competition
in Berlin (1971), as well as the Gold Medal at the Concorso Cantelli at the
Teatro alla Scala in Milan (1971).
In 1974–91 he worked as Artistic Director of the Aachen Opera (Ger-many),
the Symphony Orchestra in Bochum and the National Orches-tra in Ottawa. In
October 2001 he assumed the post of Artistic Dire-ctor of the National
Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.
He has performed with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orches-tre National de
France, the Mon-treal Symphony, the Israeli Phil-harmonic and the nhk
Orchestra in Tokyo. He has made recordings with the London Symphony
Orchestra (for dg) and the radio orchestras from Berlin and Munich (for cbs).
His cd featuring Schu-bert’s Lazarus was awarded the Grand Prix du
disque Mondial de Montreux and his recording of Haydn’s symphonies
with the National Arts Centre Orchestra (cbs) was selected by the American
Record Guide as Best Choice and was nominated for the Canadian juno Award.
In 2002 Gabriel Chmura and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in
Katowice signed a three-year contract with Chandos. The first cd in a series
devoted to the music of the Polish-born composer Mieczysław Weinberg was
released in November 2003.
Gabriel Chmura appears regularly with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and Li¬ge
Philharmonic. He is also Principal Guest Conduc-tor of ofunam Orchestra in
Mexico City.
