Jerzy Artysz studied voice (with Maria Halfter) and violin at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw. He graduated with honours from the Vocal Department
in 1959 and continued his studies with Maria Carbone-Rossini in Milan. He is a prizewinner of international vocal competitions in Moscow (1957), Toulouse (1959) and Geneva (1960). He made his operatic debut while still a student, at the Opera in £ód¼, with which he was associated until 1963. He joined the Grand Theatre in Warsaw in 1964, and remained a member of its company for 26 years, after which he concentrated on a teaching career abroad. However, he continues to return to the Grand Theatre for guest performances as Jakub in Zbigniew Rudziński’s The Mannequins. In 2001 he performed there the role of Father in Pawe³ Mykietyn’s An Ignoramus and a Madman.
He has also worked with the Warsaw Chamber Opera as a singer and stage director. In 1986 he appeared as Oedipus in the world premiere of Josep Solero’s Oedipus and Jocasta at Teatro Liceo in Barcelona.
In 1994 he recorded the oratorio Los Improperios by Federico Mompou for Harmonia Mundi. His repertoire includes all the main baritone parts, from the Baroque to contemporary works. He has taken leading roles with many prestigious opera companies in Poland and abroad. He has also given concerts in Poland and practically all over Europe, including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, the Soviet Union, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland as well as Israel, Canada and the United States.
He has worked with famous conductors and performed with many outstanding singers. He has been a frequent guest at the ‘Warsaw Autumn’ and many other major festivals.
For some time now, teaching has been the focal point of his artistic activity. He is a professor at the Vocal Department of the Frederick Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. From 1990 to 1994 he was artistic director of the opera school in Barcelona. He has held classes at the International Oratorio Music Course in Wroc³aw, Vocal Interpretation Courses at the Music Conservatory in Tarragon, and at the Polish-German Oratorio Academy (Gdańsk-Bremen).
He has also been artistic director of the Summer Opera School at the Fortuna Theatre in Reus. He has sat on the juries of the international vocal competitions in Barcelona, Bussetto, Geneva and Toulouse. In 1995 he was chairman of the jury at the 2nd Stanis³aw Moniuszko Vocal Competition in Warsaw. His honours include the Polish Composers’ Union Award for outstanding achievements in performing and promoting contemporary Polish music (1980) and the Prize of the Minister of Culture and Art (1981).
