Roland Hayrabedian is the founder and conductor of
Musicatreize. He also works with the vocal group ChOur Contem-porain
d’Aix-en-Provence, which he had founded in 1978. The overriding idea
of his activity is a constant search for a fresh approach in dialogues with
composers. He often presents concert series, such as ‘Musiques en
13’ on the 13th anniversary of Musicatreize or ‘Les Tentations’
spanning the years 2003-05.
Originally trained as an
orchestral conductor, he currently devotes a good deal of his time and
energy to vocal music (both a cappella and with orchestra), from the Baroque
and Classical repertoire to 20th-century classics and new music. He is
particularly renowned for his interpretations and recordings of
Ohana’s music, for which he has received many awards.
He has appeared as guest conductor with the orchestra of the Spoleto
Festival, the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the Chorus of
Radio France, the Orchestre Philharmonique des Pays de Loire and the
Orchestre Philharmonique de Lorraine. He has also performed with Les
Percussions de Strasbourg, Musique Vivante, Musique Oblique, 2e2m, tm+ and
many foreign ensembles. Many prominent pianists including Jay Gottlieb,
Alain Planes, Georges Pludermacher, Jean-Claude Pennetier and Abdel Rahaman
El Bacha have performed under his baton.
The musical interests of Roland Hayrabedien also include stage music, music
theatre and ballet. In 2002 he was appointed music director of the Orchestre
des Jeunes et de la Méditerranée.
