Andrzej Izdebski, born in 1975, is an improviser,
composer, musicologist and producer. He studied musicology at Warsaw
University. He is a self-taught guitarist. Having conducted experiments
on expanding the instrument’s sonoristic possibilities, and as result
of his interest in microtona-lity, he ordered two custom-made guitars, a
fretless guitar and a baritone fretless guitar, which became his main
instruments. He employs his knowledge of ethnomusicology (Africa, India,
Tuva, the Inuit people) for modern improvisation techniques.
He started his career as a performer in the early 1990s as a member of hard
core and metal groups. In 1994 he became fascinated with jazz and until 1997
was active in the Warsaw jazz community. In 1998 he established contacts
with musicians in Gdańsk. In 1999 he performed with ‘Mazzoll&Arhythmic
Perfection’, ‘Diffusion’, the Peter Kowald Improvisation
Ensemble, Ryszard Tymański, and Mikołaj Trzaska. He founded the Boys Band
Trio, with which he recorded the cd Curvatura Grande, and started
collaborating with the dancer Iliana Alvarado (project ‘Sens v’,
June 1999). He teamed up with percussionist Michał Gos in a duo
‘Sonus Akrobata’ (projects: ‘Sonus Akrobata’ for
guitar and side-drum, ‘Mandragora’ for baritone guitar and
kettledrum).
In 2000 he founded his own studio in which he recorded performances by Michał
Górczyński, Marek Rogulski, Zbigniew Szmatłoch and Zdzisław Piernik. He
runs an independent label ‘Kariatyda Records’.
Since 2000 he has performed with many musicians representing alternative and
avant-garde music such as Noel Akchote, Alexander Alexandrov, Trey Gunn,
Henry Kaiser, Siergej Letov, Vladislav Makarov, Pat Mastelotto, Zdzisław
Piernik, Ye Chun Park, Terry Riley, Soren Rudolf, Sergey Starostin, Tadeusz
Rudnik, and Misha Yudi-nich.
He has taken part in many prestigious music festivals including the Gdynia
Summer Jazz Days (1998, as a supporting act for a James Brown concert), skif
in
St Petersburg (2000, 2001, 2004), the Warsaw Summer Jazz Days (2001),
‘Alternativa’ in Moscow (2000), the theatre festivals
‘Malta’ in Poznań (1998), and ‘Okna’ (2003), as
well as the Szentendre Performance Festival (2003).
At present Andrzej Izdebski can be heard in the multimedia trio (with Michał
Górczyński, clarinet and stage movement, and vj Có-kier), the ‘Laam
Pass’ Group which blends free improvisation with noise music, and in
the Kazik Staszewski group.
