Jacek Kaspszyk studied conducting, theory and composition
at the Warsaw Academy of Music. He graduated in 1975 and in the same year
made his debut in a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the
National Opera in Warsaw. In 1976 he became Principal Guest Conductor of
Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and a year later won Third Prize at
the Herbert von Karajan Competition in Berlin. This success led to his debut
appearances in Berlin and New York. In 1978 he was appointed Principal
Conductor of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, becoming its
Director in 1980 and together making several European tours that included
his Royal Festival Hall debut in London. In 1982 he moved to London, and
made his debut with the Philharmonia and subsequently performed regularly
with all the London orchestras as well as with the Hallé, Royal Liverpool
Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, Ulster Orchestra, Royal Scottish
National, bbc Scottish and the bbc National Orchestra of Wales with which he
made his Promenade concert debut. Between 1983–87 he was Principal
Conductor of Capital Radio’s Wren Orchestra of London.
Jacek Kaspszyk has conducted leading European orchestras, including the
Berlin Philharmonic, Bayerischer Rundfunk, rso Berlin, Orchestre Nationale
de Paris, Vienna Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Philharmonic
orchestras of Stockholm, Rotterdam and Oslo, Czech Philharmonic, Royal
Flanders Philharmonic and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe
with which he toured Australia. Between 1991–95 he was Principal
Conductor and Music Advisor of the Nord Nederlands Orkest. Further afield he
has toured with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony and performed with the Tokyo
Philharmonic as well as the
Hong Kong Philharmonic and New Zealand Symphony. In
North America he has conducted the San Diego Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony,
Winnipeg Symphony, Calgary Symphony
and at the Detroit Opera.
In the field of opera, he has
collaborated with Opera de Lyon, Opera Comique in Paris, the Royal Opera in
Stockholm, Scottish Opera, the English National Opera and the Opernhaus of Zûrich.
In 1994 Kaspszyk resumed
artistic contacts with Poland,
conducting La Traviata at the National Opera and giving con-certs with the
Warsaw Philhar-monic, whose Principal Guest Conductor he became in 1996. He
also began regular performances with Sinfonia Varsovia as well as the Warsaw
Chamber Opera and its affiliate Warsaw Symphony Orchestra.
In 1998 he took up the post of Artistic and Music Director of the Grand
Theatre – National Opera. In September 2002 he was appointed its
General and Artistic Director.
Jacek Kaspszyk is widely
represented on cd. His recor-
dings for Collins Classics with London orchestras include works by
Mussorgsky, Mahler, Richard Strauss, Rachmaninov, Verdi, Johann Strauss and
Puccini. His latest recording is Stanis³aw Moniu-szko’s The Haunted
Manor with the Grand Theatre – National Opera of Warsaw, released on
emi.
