born in 1942, is among the greatest tuba virtuosos. He is
a graduate of the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw. He has given
several hundred solo appearances in sympho-nic and chamber concerts. He
collaborated with the National Theatre in Warsaw (1974–78) and the
Nowy Theatre in Łódź (1983–88). He has pursued a teaching career
since 1982.
He performed in the Inter-national Musical Meetings in Bayreuth
(1971–74), the ‘Warsaw Autumn’ Festival (since 1972)
and the festivals in Witten (1972), Cologne (1977, 1979), Darmstadt, Los
Angeles (1978), Bourges (1978), Stockholm (1979, 1981), Salzburg (1978,
1987), Lisbon (1982), Washington (1983) and Metz (1984). Foreign tours and
recording engagements have also taken him to Germany, Austria, Belgium
Holland, Britain, France, Portugal, Sweden, Japan and the United States.
Since 1978 he has been Poland’s permanent representative to the
International Tuba Euphonium Association.
Zdzisław Piernik has a highly diverse repertoire, from his own
transcriptions of works by old
masters to the latest avant-garde. Many composers have written and dedicated
their pieces to him, including B. Amman, A. Dobro-wolski, F. Grillo, R.
Haubenstock-Ramati, W. Kilar, K. Knittel,
A. Krzanowski, K. Penderecki,
B. Schaeffer, M. Stachowski, and W. Szalonek.
After several years’ break from performing avant-garde music, Zdzisław
Piernik has returned to the concert platform, including appearances with the
young gene-ration of improvising musicians

A. Izdebski).
