born in 1970 in Szczecin, plays the electric and prepared
guitar as well as electronic instruments. He attended lessons in classical
guitar in a music community centre in his native town. Since the mid-1990s
he has focused on acoustic improvised music and electronic and
electro-acoustic music. His pieces are based on pure acoustic or electronic
signals. He also makes use of sampling and pre-recorded tapes.
In recent years he has recorded several electroacoustic compositions and
solo material for prepared guitar. He has participated in recording sessions
and concerts with such musicians and ensembles as Joe Giardullo, Andrzej
Izdebski, Ute Voelker, Tomasz Krakowiak, Jacek Ostaszewski, Nordic Low Noise
Project, ‘2 Gramy, 3 Metry’, ‘Laam Paas’, and
‘Ząb Czasu’. He collaborates with the last two ensembles on a
permanent basis.
He has also worked with handicapped actors and performers.
He is a member of the qks creative acoustic music group (with
instrumentalists and composers Dawid Kosiarkiewicz and Bartek Kuźniak). His
debut cd – Spirit – featuring live and studio recordings made
over the past four years is due later this year, on the Ignis Project label.
Zbigniew Szmatłoch composes incidental music to performance shows and
theatre productions in Studio 333 and in his own studio in Szczecin.
