Sarah Wu commenced playing the flute at the age of 10.
She is
a prizewinner of many competitions in Taiwan, including those organized by
the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, the Taiwan Province (1986, 1987) and the
National Taipei University of Art (First Prize).
She studied at Boston Universi-ty with Doriot A. Dwyer, and with
Taiwan’s foremost flute teacher and soloist Jinny Liu. She also
attended masterclasses given by some of the world’s most prominent
teachers, including Wolfgang Schulz, Peter Lukas Graf, Andras Adorian, Janos
Balint and Patrick Gallois.
Sarah Wu has participated in the Pacific Music Festival in 1996 and 1997,
and has appeared in concerts throughout Taiwan, Japan, China and Vietnam.
She has performed as soloist with the Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra, the
Taipei Symphony Orchestra (in Mozart’s Concerto in G Major, K 313),
and the Taipei Flute Ensemble. She has toured Taiwan with Ibert’s
Concerto, and has appeared in concerts with the principal flute player of
the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perfor-ming Cimarosa’s Double Flute
Concerto. She also performed in woodwind quintets with members of the Vienna
Philharmonic at the Pacific Music Festival, as well as in Shanghai, Tokyo
and Hanoi.
At present Sarah Wu is Principal Flautist of both the Taipei Sinfonietta and
Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Taipei Metropolitan Woodwind Quintet. She
also teaches at Taipei Municipal Teacher’s College, Fu-Jen Catholic
University, and the Shih Chien University. She is the author of Questions
and Answers on Flute Playing published by the Mercury Publishing House.
