Max Engel studied cello in
Innsbruck and Saarbrücken with Walter Kurz and Maurice Gendron. A member
of a family with rich musical traditions, he had contact with many
instruments since early childhood. As a Baroque-cellist he has performed
with such renowned ensembles as Collegium Aureum, Divertimento Salzburg,
the Salzburg Baroque Ensemble, Il Giardino armonico and Ensemble Baroque
de Limoges. He has been a member of the Vienna-based Concentus Musicus led
by Nikolaus Harnoncourt for over ten years now. He is also active as a
teacher at the Department of Music Education in Innsbruck (Mozarteum
Salzburg), previously serving as professor of cello at the Tyrolean State
Conservatory in Innsbruck. He has made numerous recordings of contemporary
music for orf-Tirol on the modern cello. He plays the baryton in the piece
by Klaus Huber. He also arranged the viola part for the baryton in Younghi
Pagh-Paan’s Noch especially for the Warsaw Autumn Festival.
