Sonora Vaice, born in 1969, in
1992 graduated from the Latvian Academy of Music, where she studied voice
with Ludmila Brauna. She perfected her skills with Katia Angeloni at the
N. Piccini Conservatory in Bari and in London with Iris dell’Aqua, Vera
Rosza and Gerald Martin Moore (1998–00). She was a soloist at the
Latvian National Opera from 1991 to 1995. Since 1995 she has worked as a
free-lance artist.
Her honours include the Grand Prix of the Janis Medinš International
Vocal Competition in Riga (1992), the Grand Prix in ‘The Stars of the
Baltic Sea’ Competition in
St Petersburg (1992), the Latvian Grand Music Award (1996) and the Aldaris
Annual Award in Latvia (2000). She was a finalist in the Belvedere
competition (1997).
Her extensive repertoire includes major parts in operas by Donizetti (Aldina
in L’elissir d’amore and Lucia), Mozart (Donna Anna in Don Giovanni
and Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte), and Verdi (Gilda in Rigoletto and
Violetta in La Traviata) as well as Mimi in Puccini’s La Boh?me, Tamara
in Anton Rubinstein’s The Demon and the title role in Handel’s Alcina.
She also appears on the concert platform. She sang in the Latvian premiere
of John Tavener’s Fall and Resurrection.
