Peter Hirsch, born in 1956,
studied conducting in Cologne. Upon graduation he became assistant to
Michael Gielen at the Frankfurt Opera, where he later served as first
conductor (1984–87). In 1985 he made his debut at La Scala conducting
Luigi Nono’s Prometeo (world premiŹre of the final version). In the
following year he conducted the premiŹres of Hans Zender’s opera
Stephen Climax in Frankfurt and Nono’s Risonanze Erranti in Cologne. He
also prepared opera productions in Vancouver, at the English National
Opera and Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, Netherlands Opera in
Amsterdam (the reconstruction of the original version of Berlioz’s
Benvenuto Cellini) and at the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin. He
appears as guest conductor with the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin,
the radio orchestras of Berlin, Frankfurt, Freiburg im Breisgau,
Baden-Baden and Leipzig, the L’Orchestre National de Belgique as well as
with major new music ensembles. He has performed at such prestigious
festivals as Ars Musica in Brussels, the Munich Biennale, the Steirischer
Herbst and the festivals in Berlin and Bologna. He has to his credit first
performances of works by Nono, B. A. Zimmermann, Lachenmann and Zender.
His cd catalogue includes music by Schubert, Bruckner, Mahler, Brahms, Schönberg,
Janáček, Nono and
B. A. Zimmermann.
